One of Asia’s Leading Jazz Vocalists
WOONGSAN
A rich, warm lower register, nuanced emotional expression, and a commanding stage presence. Woongsan is a jazz vocalist and singer-songwriter who connects with audiences through her unmistakable voice and distinctive musical language. Performing across Korea and around the world, she has earned lasting admiration for music that combines the depth of jazz with a broad emotional appeal.
As a singer-songwriter, Woongsan transforms the emotions and stories of her life into lyrics and melodies. Love and longing, loss and comfort, and her personal view of the world find honest expression in her songs. Original compositions such as “Yesterday” reveal a creative identity as distinctive as her voice. In the music she writes and sings, the depth of lived experience resonates with the intimacy of a personal confession.
Rooted in jazz, her music moves freely through blues, soul, funk, Latin, and other genres. From intimate, almost whispered ballads to songs driven by powerful rhythms, her versatility and rich vocal palette bring each song’s emotions vividly to life. On stage, spontaneous exchanges with fellow musicians and a close connection with the audience give familiar songs a fresh expression with every performance.
This spirit of exploration is vividly reflected in her tenth studio album, Who Stole the Skies. Writing lyrics and music for many of its tracks and serving as the album’s producer, Woongsan expanded her musical world by bringing together the emotional traditions of Korean music, blues, and contemporary jazz sounds. Her involvement across lyrics, melody, arrangement, and sound demonstrates the breadth of her artistry as both a singer-songwriter and a producer.
Woongsan’s musical achievements have earned recognition in Korea and abroad. At the 2008 Korean Music Awards, Yesterday and its title track won Best Jazz & Crossover Album and Best Jazz & Crossover Song, respectively. In 2010, her work received a Gold Disc distinction from Japan’s jazz magazine Swing Journal. In 2021, she received the Prime Minister’s Commendation at the Korean Popular Culture and Arts Awards in recognition of her longstanding contributions to music.
Her appearances at renowned jazz venues, including Blue Note and Billboard Live in Japan, and collaborations with internationally acclaimed musicians such as Lee Ritenour, Nathan East, and John Beasley have brought further depth to her artistry. Her curiosity and willingness to explore continue through crossover projects encompassing traditional Korean and classical music, as well as a wide range of stage and broadcast performances.
A voice that deepens with time, lyrics that capture life’s moments, and melodies that unfold freely. Woongsan continues to write and sing her own stories, hoping that the emotions within them will linger in the lives of those who listen.
